George William Arthur Nobbs was born in Rattlesden (2nd qtr 1885 Stow 4a:686), son of Samuel Frederick and Mary Ann NOBBS (née CODD).
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at 26 Stowmarket Road, Brettenham with his father Samuel F. NOBBS [37] domestic groom/gardener born Brettenham; his mother Mary A. [39] born Buxhall; sisters Alice M.A. [7] born Brettenham; Rose A.[4] born Rattlesden and Kate E. [2] born Brettenham 1901 census...Aged 16, a stable boy, he was at Tillage Cottages, Brettenham with his parents and sisters Rose and Kate. 1911 census...Aged 26, domestic gardener, he was at Rectory Road, Cockfield boarding with George and Gertrude SNELL and their 2 sons. His parents were in Brettenham. His mother had lost 3 of her 6 children. The pension card has his mother Mary Ann at 8 Brettenham. |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. 25th to 28th September inclusive the 8th Suffolks were in the attacks on Thiepval and the Schwaben Redoubt.
Having taken the ZOLLERN TRENCH and consolidated there, the attack was renewed on the 28th, BULGAR TRENCH and part of the SCHWABEN REDOUBT
being the objectives. The first was quickly taken but stubborn resistance meant it was 2 pm before they had taken the second objective and
gained touch on both flanks. The next day they went to billets in Forceville. The 4 days had cost the battalion 200 casualties.
