Harry Smith was born in Cockfield (2nd qtr 1876 Cosford 4a:534), son of James and Susan SMITH (née MATTHEWS). Baptised 30th July 1876 in Cockfield.

1881 census...Aged 5, he was at Windsor Green, Cockfield with his father James SMITH [38] farm labourer born Ditchingham; his mother Susan [36]; brothers Walter [15] farm labourer born London and Ernest [6]; sister Minnie [10]. All except his father and Walter were born in Cockfield.

1891 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was at Windsor Green with his parents, brothers Ernest (farm labourer) and Arthur [6].

He married Harriett Jane ALBON [1-1-1879] in 1st qtr 1901 in Cosford.

1901 census...Aged 25, a bricklayer's labourer, married, he was at Windsor Green with his parents and brother Arthur. His wife and 1 month old son (un-named) were at Bradfield Combust with her parents, Arthur and Kate ALBON

1911 census...Aged 35, a roadman, he was at Windsor Green with his wife Harriett Jane [32] born Bradfield Combust; son William Harry [2-3-1901] born Bradfield Combust and daughter Elsie May [11-5-1906] born Cockfield.

The pension card has his widow at Windsor Green, Cockfield.



He enlisted in Sudbury. The battalion war diary has them at Camp "A" (at Ouderdom, Poperinge, Belgium, near Grootebeek British Cemetery) at rest on 1st - 4th February 1916, with just Harry killed and one man wounded on 1st.
