Harry Sparkes was born in Shimpling (2nd qtr 1893 Sudbury 4a:753), son of Alfred and Ellen SPARKES (née UNGLES).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Brands Lane, Lawshall with his father Alfred SPARKE [39] horsekeeper; his mother Ellen [30]; sisters Elsie [11] and Alice [5]; brother John [10]. All were born in Shimpling. 1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was at New Barn, Cockfield with his parents, brothers John (farm labourer), William [9] and Fred [4] both born Lawshall; sisters Alice, Beatrice [7] born Lawshall and Vera [1] born Alpheton; nephew Charlie SPARKE [9 months] born Cockfield. The pension card has his mother at Broom Barn Farm, Bradfield St. Clare. |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. Being in France by 11th November 1914 it seems strange that he has no clasp to his 1914 Star, but perhaps
nobody in the family claimed it.
The battalion war diary for 22nd to 30th March simply has them at Vierstraat, in the trenches, normal routine and names the dead and wounded.
