George Robert Sturgeon was born in Birds Lane, Cockfield on 24th September 1893 ( 4th qtr 1893 Cosford 4a:706), son of Robert William and Mary STURGEON (née WRIGHT). Baptised in Cockfield on 31st December 1893.

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at The Workhouse Yard, Cockfield with his father Robert W. STURGEON [36] stockman, born Gibraltar; his mother Mary [34] born Lawshall; brothers Robert W [5], Arthur [3] and Charles [1]. All the children were born in Cockfield.

1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was still at the Workhouse Yard, with his father, brothers Robert (farm labourer), Arthur and Charles; sister Edith [3] born Cockfield. His mother was visiting her parents George and Esther WRIGHT at North Hill Cottages, Rushbrook.

The pension card has his father at Rectory Road, Cockfield.



He enlisted in Ipswich.
The battalion had a rough time in Ypres, the war diary has :-
Ypres - Feb.18th 2a.m.- Relieved in trenches by 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers and marched to billets in KRUIKSTRAAT. Casualties during forty eight hours in trenches, 4 officers and 19 other ranks killed, 4 officers and 53 other ranks wounded, 3 officers and 171 other ranks missing.
