Died of his Wounds on Monday, 24th September 1917

Fred Carter was born in Cowlinge in 1880 (Risbridge Q1-1881 4A:728), son of Edwin and Charlotte CARTER (née FISHER).

1881 census...Aged 7 months,he was at Mill Green, Colwinge with his father Edwin CARTER [43] farm labourer born Lewisham; his mother Charlotte [39] born Kirtling; brothers William [16] farm labourer, Thomas Fisher [8] and Joseph [2]; sisters Florence [11], Martha J [9] and Agnes [7].All the children were born in Cowlinge.

1891 census...Aged 10, he was at Mill Road, Cowlinge with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Carlton); brothers Francis (Thomas ?) [17] farm labourer, Joseph, Alfred [7] and Ernest [5] both born in Cowlinge.

1901 census...Aged 19, a domestic footman, he was at Mill Road, Cowlinge with his parents and brother Ernest (farm labourer).

1911 census...Aged 30, gardener's labourer, he was at Mill Lane, Cowlinge with his parents and brothers Francis andErnest (both farm labourers). His mother had lost 2 of her 13 children.

By the time of the pension card his mother was at Pond Green, Cowlinge

He enlisted in Newmarket in September 1914. Taking his age from CWGC he seems to have taken at least 3 years off his age .
As usual, with no service records, dying of his wounds means there is no real way of telling exactly where and when he was wounded. The battalion was certainly going through a quiet spell, having lost only 6 men in the previous 8 days.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR COWLINGE SOLDIER

Last week official news was received by Mr. E.Carter, Mill Road, Cowlinge, that his son, Prvt Fred Carter,11th Suffolk Regiment had been dangerously wounded in France on September 20th. A few days later the sad news followed that the poor fellow had succumbed to his wounds at the Casualty Clearing Station.Since being brought in he had only been partially conscious at intervals. A very sympathetic letter was forwarded by the hospital matron, giving a few details of his wounds and subsequently passing away. The greatest sympathy is felt by all for his aged parents and friends
