Henry Joseph Hurst was born in Cowlinge (Risbridge Q3-1885 4A-595), baptised in Cowlinge on 23rd August 1885, son of John and Sarah HURST
(née FROST).
1891 census...Aged 5, he was at Lambfair Green, Cowlinge with his father John HURST [45] farm labourer; his mother Sarah [40]; brothers Edward J [18] farm labourer born Lidgate; Andrew J.[15], Herbert J.[12] both farm labourers, Alfred [8] and Arthur [11 months]; sisters Marion [11] and Harriet [3]. All except Edward were born in Cowlinge. 1901 census...Aged 15, a milk boy, he was at No 1 Field Terrace Road, Newmarket with his brother Edward HURST and his wife Lizzie [26] born Soham and their niece Harriet W Moden [10 months) born Soham 1911 census...Aged 25, a gardener, he was living at The Bothy, Sunnyside, Holmworth nr Dorking, Surrey, with two other gardeners Harry BUSH and Thomas TANCOCK. He married Annie Florence COOK,(b. 21-2-1889) from Gravesend, in Ipplepen, Devon in 1913, later of 7 Nelson Road, Perry Street, Gravesend. They had two sons, William John (30-8-1914) and Henry Jack (5-1-1916) |
He enlisted in Exeter in November 1915, when resident in Ipplepen, Devon. 138th Field Ambulance was attached to the 41st Division, which had just fought in the Battle of Messines (June 7 to 14). That day the RAMC had 8 men die, 2 from 138th Field Ambulance and 6 from 72nd Field Ambulance, all buried in Dickebusch. The circumstance are so far unknown, but it appears there was a gas attack on 138 F.A. The Bury Free Press of 30th June 1917 recorded:- ANOTHER COWLINGE MAN KILLED From information just received it is learned that another Cowlinge lad has met his death in the war. Prvt.Henry Hurst, R.A.M.C. while discharging his duties as a stretcher bearer on the battlefield in France on Sunday June 16th, was killed by a bursting shell which laid low three out of the four who were carrying off the field a wounded comrade. Prvt.Hurst is the son of Ms Hurst, a widow living on Lambfair Green,and the greatest sympathy is felt for his mother and family. The unfortunate man leaves a widow and three children. Two of his brothers reside in Newmarket.
