John Robert AGAR, born 8th April 1921, was the eldest son of Leonard Edwin and Aline Marry AGAR (née WILLSON). His birth registration
has not been found, but they appear to have been a very much travelled family. On 10th May 1924, with his mother (aged 30) and brother Michael E (aged 1), he sailed from London to Kobe in Japan on the Hakozaki Maru. Their UK address then was 313 Norton Way, Letchworth. Father, Leonard, from Woolston, Farringdon a correspondent, had gone to Japan on 3rd August. The 2 boys returned to London from Yokohama, with their nurse (Lizzie MEALOR) on 8th February 1926 on the Kamo Maru to go to their aunt Mrs Sharman in London. His parents' address in 1939 was "Standelfield", Standhill Road, Hitchin, and in 1945 was Bacton, Norfolk. In the 1939 register John was a premium pupil motor engineer, staying with his uncle and aunt, Philip and Cora SHARMAN at Malt House Cottage, Smallburgh, Norfolk His brother Michael Edwin was killed on air operations in Poland in 1944 see here. |

Commissioned w.e.f 3rd July 1942 (Gazette 8/9/1942) John was flying in a Vickers Wellington MkIII, ser.no. BJ987, id. PP-L or ZP-L of 25 Operational Training Unit which took off from RAF Finningley at 20:22 on 10th September 1942 for a bombing raid on Dusseldorf. Presumed crashed in North Sea and body washed ashore. After this, due to unacceptable losses, the RAF ceased to use crews still under training in such missions. The navigator F.Sgt Cleveand EGGLETON RCAF is also buried in Oostduinkerke, pilot F/Sgt Richard BERTRAM RCAF is buried in Adegem and Sgt Frank GALLAGHER RCAF and Sgt Richard GEORGE RCAF were never found. |
