There are 2 G.E.Hardy on CWGC about the same age, both in the 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, both from Lincolnshire, but it does seem
more likely that the farmer's son, not the iron foundry labourer's son would have gone to the East Anglian School.
George Ernest HARDY was born in Crowland, Lincolnshire in 1888 (Peterborough Q4-1888 3B:244), son of George Henry and Margaret HARDY (née WELDON). 1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Postland(Great), Crowland with his father George Henry HARDY [38] farmer, born Crowland; his mother Margaret [38] born Farcett, Hunts; sisters Lucy Annie [8] and Ethel Mary [6]; brothers Henry Horace [4] and Arthur Bernard [11 months]. All the children were born in Postland, Crowland 1901 census...Aged 12, he was still at Postland, with his parents; sister Lucy and brother Arthur. His mother's birthplace now recorded as New Ketton, Peterborough 1911 census...Aged 22, an assistant on farm, he was at Hykeham, Spalding with Henry Matthew PROCTOR. His parents and sister Lucy were still at Postland. At probate, the family address was still Postland, Crowland, Lincolnshire. They were at "The Sycamores", Postland. His pension card has not been found. |

He enlisted on 28th August 1914, in Luton. He died from nephritis at 28th Division Casualty Clearing Station. Lijssenthoek is the 2nd largest British cemetery in Belgium, after Tyne Cot, with 10,121 casualties.
Dying of illness it is not possible to ascertain when or exactly where this started. His battalion were in the Zillebeke area in late August.
