HOWARD, Dennis Marshall [MC]

201370, Second Lieutenant, Dennis Marshall HOWARD MC
Aged 23

Notts (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps
Died of Wounds in Captivity on Tuesday, 21st July 1942

Dennis Marshall HOWARD was born in 1919 (Depwade Q1-1919 4B:272), son of Harry Frederick and Persis Jenery HOWARD(née SHEE), of Harleston, Norfolk..

He was a member of the 3rd Bury St. Edmunds Scouts (Culford School)

In the 1939 register at Harleston were his father Harry F [19-4-1878] master draper /special constable and his mother Persis J [30-9-1888]. No closed records.

Enlisted initially into the Royal Artillery, he was transferred to the Royal Tank Corps 11th November 1938. The Nottinghamshire Yeomanry had a secondary title (which was not officially approved) of "Sherwood Rangers". On incorporation into the Royal Armoured Corps (R.A.C.) they were one of the units to retain their cap badge, on the black beret of the RAC. Part of Montgomery's 8th Army in North Africa they followed into Italy.

Commissioned from Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU) into Nottinghamshire Yeomanry (TA) on 9th August 1941. His Military Cross was gazetted on 13th August 1942.

His initial burial place is not named, he is recorded as dying of his wounds whilst a prisoner of war. He was exhumed and re-interred in Florence on 8th March 1945. A visit to The National Archives seems necessary to continue, and perhaps find a citation for his M.C.
