Stanley ROGERS was born in Clapham on 21st July 1891 ( Wandsworth Q3-1891 1D:685), son of James and Mary Ann ROGERS (née PILKINGTON ). 1901 census...Aged 9, he seems to be the visitor, a few doors from home, at 13 Knoll Road, Wandsworth the home of Salvation Army Officer Thomas G MARSTON and his wife Kezia and their five children. Another visitor was Charles W Rogers [16], also born Clapham (his brother ?). His parents were at 21 Knoll Road, Wandsworth, father James [44] stone merchant, born Semley, Wiltshire; mother Mary A [43] born Kersley Moor, Lancashire; sisters Edith A [23] born Lambeth and Ethel M [20], also born in Lambeth. East Anglian School Captain in 1908, 1911 census...Aged 19, he appears to be the bank clerk, boarding with Edward and Nina CLARK at 29 Priory Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire. His parents (father now retired builder) were at Westbury Cottage, Ashwell near Baldock with his sister Edith Annie. His documents at the time of commissioning state he was educated at The East Anglian School. One of his referees was Samuel Leigh, Principal of the school. He went on to matriculation at London University. On 19th July 1916 at Camberwell Church he married Annie Daisy KYTE. His address was given as 1 St Helen's Towers, Clarenden Road, Southsea. His father James (gentleman) was present. Stanley and Annie were later at 64 Cottage Grove, Southsea, Hants. |

He enlisted on 9th December 1915 at Winchester and placed on Reserves. Mobilised on 17th February 1916 into 26th Battalion,
Royal Fusiliers , No.23443. He gave his age as 24 years, a bank clerk, single, living at 1 St Helen's Towers,
Clarendon Road, Southsea, Portsmouth. 5 feet 7 inches (170.2 cm)tall, chest 34.5" to 37" (87.6 to 94 cm), weighing 144 lbs (65.5 kg).
Initially his next of kin was father, James Rogers at that address but later changed to his wife Annie Daisy (née KYTE) from 63 Louth Road, Camberwell After posting to the BEF in France on 16th August 1916 he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment on 31st August 1916, but attached back to the London Regiment 17th Battalion on 27th October 1917 on his return to UK He then went to Officer Cadet Battalion at Pirbright on 5th January 1918, before being commissioned into 3rd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment on 28th May 1918. On 4th October 1918 the 7th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment war diary has:- 0600. Battalion attacked and captured PROSPECT HILL (near GOUY) and trenches to NORTH thereof. CaptureS:- PRISONERS - 152, LIGHT FIELD GUNS 1, MACHINE GUNS 25, CARRIER PIGEONS 7. Position held all day, several heavy counter attacks being repulsed. Sadly no casualty report. CWGC has 2 officers and 2 other ranks killed, only Stanley has no known grave. |
