BLOOMFIELD, Percy Charles

No. C/JX 154324, Able Seaman, Percy Charles BLOOMFIELD
Aged 19

HMS Pembroke, Royal Navy
Died from Illness on 21st January 1941

Percy Charles Bloomfield was born on 26th May 1921 in Drinkstone (3rd qtr 1921 Stow 4a:1742) son of James William and May Kate BLOOMFIELD (née HORREX).

In the 1939 register his family lived at 1 Council Houses, Gedding Road, Drinkstone, father James William BLOOMFIELD [3-3-1893] a labourer and A.R.P.(Air Raid Precautions) stretcher bearer, mother May Kate [10-2-1901], brothers John [29-11-1924] a farm labourer and William [8-7-1934]. There are 6 closed records, they would be Susan, Gladys, David, Dennis and Ivy ( the sixth is a mystery.

He enlisted in the Royal Navy as a boy at HMS Ganges. He served on the battleship HMS Resolution in the North Atlantic and was sent for further training to HMS Pembroke, a "stone frigate", i.e. shore base, in Chatham. There he fell ill and died at Chatham Royal Naval Hospital from Septicaemia and acute follicular tonsillitis.

As HMS Resolution was engaged in the battle for Narvik it is possible that Percy qualified for the Arctic Star (not instituted until 2013). Unfortunately we do not know the exact dates he was with HMS Resolution. He had left her and was on minesweepers just prior to his death.
