James Gill was born in Bury St. Edmunds on 9th November 1895 (4th qtr 1895 Bury St. Edmunds 4a:763), son of James and Agnes Harriett GILL (née SHEPPARD)

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at 15 South Street, Ipswich with his mother Agnes GILL [29] and his brother Edward [3] and sister Agnes [4]. All were born in Bury St. Edmunds. His father was serving in the Suffolk Regiment.

He was admitted to St. Matthew's Primary School, Ipswich on 18th March 1901. He was at St.vJames' School, Bury St. Edmunds from 11th May 1903 to 1906 and from 7th January 1907 at Drinkstone School.

1911 census...Aged 15, a domestic groom, he was at New Cottage, The Green, Drinkstone, with his father James GILL [44] rural letter carrier / Army pensioner born Drinkstone; his mother; brothers Edward, Robert [7] born Longmeadow, Lode, Cambs and Walter [5] born Bury St. Edmunds ; sister Victoria [10] born Ipswich. His mother had lost one of her seven children .

On the pension card his father was at New Cottage, Drinkstone, later at Grove Cottage, Sible Hedingham. His father, an ex regular soldier with 22 years service, volunteered again in 1914 and served 2 years in the Suffolk regiment as Colour Sergeant in 3rd Battalion. He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds in 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment in 1913. He was in Ireland on the outbreak of war and was with the 2nd Battalion when they landed in France on 23rd August. At some time he was transferred to the 1st Battalion.
Presumably wounded in the battle for the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 3rd October, and passed through the medical chain until he arrived at St Omer's 10th Stationary Hospital where he died on 6th October. His legatee was Miss Lilian HARVEY.
