ROSE, Sydney Arthur

No.14005, Private, Sydney Arthur ROSE
Aged 29

8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on 28th October 1916

Sidney Arthur Rose was born in Drinkstone on (2nd qtr 1887 Stow 4a:751), son of William and Kezia ROSE (née BUTCHER). He can be Sidney or Sydney.

1891 census...Aged 4, he was at Rattlesden Road, Drinkstone with his father William ROSE [42] farm labourer born Woolpit; his mother Keziah [43] born Sicklesmere; sisters Abigail [16], Beatrice [10], Eva [9] and Rebecca [1]; brother Walter J. [14] farm labourer, Leonard G. [8] and Sydney A.[6]. All the children were born in Drinkstone.

1901 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at The Green, Drinkstone with his parents; brothers Walter (farm labourer), George (Leonard),and Cecil; sisters Beatrice, Eva and Rebecca.

1911 census...Aged 24, a farm labourer, he was at Drinkstone Green with his parents, sisters Abigail and Rebecca and brother Cecil. His newly married brother Leonard was with his wife in Woolpit.

On the pension card his mother was at Cambourne Farm, Drinkstone.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds in 1914. From their regimental numbers it looks as if the brothers all signed on together. Certainly Cecil and Sydney signed side by side. They all served in the 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, a practice that was not universally welcomed due to the effect this could have on a family as this could lead to deaths side by side as well. In this case their deaths were spread over 7 months.

The 8th Suffolk on 29th October 1916 war diary has :-
Battalion relieved 6th Battn Northampton Regt in REGINA TRENCH, relief was carried out in daylight and completed by 2:30 pm. During the evening VANCOUVER TRENCH was heavily shelled - "A" Coy who were counter-attacked in this trench had their Company HQ blown in and 5 men killed. Lieut J.E. ROW was killed shortly after in this trench by a shell. Battn H.Q. was situated at 57d.R.29.central (Map Le Sars). Battn under orders of 54th Inf Bde.

The Battalion had 6 men killed, 3 are buried in Regina Trench Cemetery and 3 named on the Thiepval Memorial. From that it appears that Sydney was with "A" Company in Vancouver Trench.
