Duncan Vere Webb was born on 20th March 1896 at Curragh, Kildare, Ireland, son of Major Duncan and Madalene WEBB (née BROCK)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Osborne Road, Farnborough with his mother Madalene [33] born Glasgow, Scotland; sister Madalene R [2] born Ireland and aunt Edith BROCK [31] born Scotland. His father Duncan [39] was born in Niagara, Canada and was a serving Major in the Leicestershire Regiment.

1911 census...Aged 15, he was at Uppingham School, Rutland. His parents ( father now in Army Service Corps) were at Drinkstone House with his sisters Ruth [12] born Kilkenny; Gwynedd [7] and Victoria [6] both born Bournemouth and brother Hugh [3] born Brighton. His mother had lost one of her 7 children.,



Having served in the Officer Training Corps at Uppingham School in 1913, he entered Sandhurst as a Cadet in 1914. Commissioned 1st October 1914; promoted temp Lieut.21-2-1915; temp Capt 24-12-1915; temp Lieut. 7-1-1916; temp Capt 7-3-1916; temp Lieut 13-3-1916; acting Capt 2-5-1916; acting Capt 19-1-1917.

1st June 1917 he was commanding "C" Company 1st Leicesters and was still their C.O. on 1st October.
"C" Coy 1st Leicesters relieved "C" Coy 9th Suffolks in Catapult Trench on 9th October 1917. (This is around the current junction of the A21 with the D947 north of Lens). Apparently no major operations, just routine trench work, in fact they had none killed that week, however he was wounded and admitted to No.5 C.C.S. at Tincourt on the 11th but died of his wounds in 16th.





Duncan Webb is buried in Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, France 3:A:21
