Edward Albert Banham was born in Ixworth on 19th August 1893(3rd qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:760) son of Isaac and Elizabeth Ann BANHAM(née HOWE). Baptised in Ixworth St Mary on 17th September 1893

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Thurston Road, Great Barton with his father Isaac BANHAM [43] road surveyor's foreman born Rattlesden; his mother Elizabeth [43] born Ixworth; sister Mabel [13]; brothers John [12] and Sidney [9] all 3 born in Ixworth; William [5]; sisters Violet [4] and Maud [2], these three born in Great Barton.

1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was at 4 Brocklyn Cottages, Great Barton with his parents, father now a farm labourer; brother William (farm labourer), sisters Maud, Hilda [10] and Eliza [6]; brothers Thomas [8] and Harry [5]. All the new siblings were born in Great Barton. His mother had lost 2 of her 15 children.

On the pension card his mother was at Thurston Road, Great Barton. She died in 1922

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
In late October the 7th Suffolks had been resting and training in the area of Bethune, taking their turn in the line at Givenchy-Hulluch. That week they had had only 3 killed, but then, on the 30th. (according to "Our Exning Heroes" entry for Jack Dennis) an aerial torpedo killed 5 near Hulluch.
