Erenst George Bean was born on 4th April 1892 in St.Andrews, Deal (2nd qtr 1892 EASTRY 2a:958) son of Richard Charles and Emily Elizabeth BEAN (née READ)

1901 census...none of the family found in this census.

1911 census...Aged 18, a Private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, he was in barracks at Chatham. His parents were at 13 Cannon Road, Deal, father Richard Charles BEAN [49],a bricklayer's labourer, born Walmer; his mother Emily Elizabeth [48] born Canterbury; brothers William Edwin Read [24] a gardener born Walmer, twins Alfred Cecil and Hubert Cyril [12] born Deal and sister Lilian Ethel [[7] born Deal] He married Ruby Constance GILLINGS on 13th July 1915 at Christ Church, Chelsea, later c/o her mother at Hiawatha Cottage, Great Barton. Her father was a police constable in Chelsea. Their daughter Phyllis Ernestine Ruby was born on 10th September 1917. His widow re married in 1930 to Ernest M MULLEY of Dawn Villa, Stanton.

On the pension card his widow was at c/o Mrs GILLINGS, Great Barton.
He was included in the list of the fallen by the Vicar at a post war memorial service in Great Barton.

His brother in law Charles Gillings was killed in 1916 on the Somme serving in the Black Watch see here


He enlisted in Deal on 9th February 1910, 5 feet 9 inches tall, Baptist, N of Kin his parents later replaced by wife Ruby Constance.
He joined HMS Vanguard on 31st March 1914
HMS Vanguard was one of three St Vincent-class dreadnought battleships. She spent her time with the Home and Grand Fleets. She took part in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 and the inconclusive action of 19 August several months later, otherwise her service during World War I mostly consisted of routine patrols and training in the North Sea.
Around midnight on 9 July 1917 at anchor in Scapa Flow, Vanguard suffered a series of magazine explosions. She sank almost instantly, killing 843 of the 845 men aboard.
