Robert William Meadows was born in Sutton (1st qtr 1884 Woodbridge 4a:813), son of Robert and Martha MEADOWS (née SNOWDEN ) He was more usually William Robert.

1891 census...Aged 7, he was at Sparrows Nest Cottages, Onehouse with his father Robert MEADOWS [37] shepherd born Sudbourne; his mother Martha [32] born Chillesford; sisters Anna Augusta [14] born Yoxford, Eliza [12] born Chillesford, Minnie Ellen [9] born Sutton, Mary Louise [2] born Kirkley and Martha Elizabeth [1 month] born Onehouse.

1901 census...Aged 17 a shepherd's page he was at Field Farm, Higham Road, Tuddenham with his parents; brother George (shepherd's page), Nathaniel [9] born Sutton, John [5] born Butley and Horace [3] born Bromley, Essex; sisters Mary, Martha, and Dora [1] born Ramsholt

1911 census...Aged 24, he was a Private in the 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment in Egypt. At The Street, Gazeley, were his parents; brothers Nathaniel, John Edward and Horace James; sister Dora Florence May.

He married Evelyn May BYFORD in June 1917 in Great Barton. They had a son Robert Paul [1918-1919]

On the pension card his widow was at Hill Farm Cottages, Great Bealing, Woodbridge and later of Breakpin Farm, Flempton (CWGC)



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 19th December 1906, giving his age as 20 years 11 months, single, born Sutton nr Woodbridge, a labourer. He was 5 feet 6.5 inches tall, weighed 126 lbs, chest 33 to 35.5 inches, brown eyes, dark brown hair, C of E.
Promoted Lance Corporal 1st March 1915. Wounded by shrapnel to head and paralysed down left side and captured in Belgium 8th May 1915. Reported PoW at Munster on 14th June 1915. Exchanged as PoW and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth on 7th October 1915. Discharged with head wound and hemiplegia on 7th December 1915
Nothing found in International Red Cross prisoners records.
8th May 1915 the 1st Suffolks were heavily involved in the battle of the Frenzenberg Ridge and suffered over 400 casualties
