1891 census...Aged 9 Months, he was at Osborne's Cottages, Great Welnetham with his father William WOODGATE [27] gardener; his mother Harriett H [23] born Hawstead; brother Frederick W [3]. All except his mother were born in Great Welnetham. His mother died in 1893 1901 census...Aged 10, he was at Westrope's Cottage, Great Welnetham with his widower father ( now farm labourer) and brother Frederick W (labourer). All now recorded as born Sicklesmere. Housekeeper Mary MATTHOLI [40] and her daughters Ethel V.W. MATTHOLI [2] and Victoria M W [10 months] all three recorded as born Sicklesmere 1911 census...Aged 20, farm labourer, he was at Hawstead Lane, Sicklesmere with his father, brother Frederick, housekeeper Mary Mattholi and her 2 daughters On the pension card his father was at Hawstead Lane, Great Welnetham. |
He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
One other member of his company died that day. No war diary has been found, but they were on the Somme.
