George Rowlingson was born in Great Wratting (Risbridge Q1-1892 4A:705), son of William and Ellen ROWLINGSON (née CORNELL). The "G" in their surname is often
omitted.
1901 census...Aged 9, George ROWLINSON was at Jubilee Cottages, Great Wartting with his father William ROWLINSON [44] cowman; his mother Ellen [43] born Barnardiston; brothers John [16] cow man, Arthur [13] farm labourer, David [11], Walter [6], William [3] and Richard [3 months]. All except his mother were born in Great Wratting. 1911 census...Aged 19, farm labourer, he was at Great Wratting with his parents and brothers Walter (farm labourer), William (houseboy and Richard (scholar). All 10 siblings survived. He married Lizzie SIZER [17-12-1890] in 1915, later of 72 Crowland Road, Haverhill. His brother William was killed serving on HMS 'Calliope' in May 1916 see here |

He enlisted in Chelmsford. The war diary for the 2nd Essex:- Front line - May 12th - At 6:30 am the 10th and 11th Bdes made an attack and advanced further west of the CHEMICAL WORKS. The Battn received an order that they might have to go up into the front line and support the 1st Hampshire Regt, but nothing came of this. Orders came through at 6 pm that the Battn would be relieved tonoght. At 9:30 pm B and D Coys withdrew and marched back to transport lines. At about 11:30 pm A and C Coys (having previously moved to CORDITE TRENCH) were relieved by A Coy HQ and 2 platoons of 1/8th ARGYLE and SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS and then marched back to transport lines. Relief complete at midnight. Only 4 officers came out of the line with the battalion out of 25 who had been with them during this tour. Casualties 5 OR killed, 14 OR wounded, 3 OR to FA. 2nd Lts TW Offin, F.Goodyear wounded, 2/Lt GF Barker killed. CWG figures show 2/Lt Barker and 4 OR killed.
