Eric William Pettitt was born in Ousden (4th qtr 1892 Newmarket 3b:486) son of Alfred and Sarah PETTITT (née MISON). He was baptised in Ousden (St. Peter) on 1st January 1893, father a butcher.

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Wickhambrook Road, Hargrave with his father Alfred PETTITT [34] butcher; his mother Sarah [36]; brothers Bertie [10] and Frederick [4]; sisters Julia [13] and Mabel [6]. All were born in Ousden.

1911 census...Aged 18, assistant butcher, he was in Hargrave with his parents; brothers Bertie (assistant butcher), Fred (farm labourer) and Cyril [4] born Hargrave; sister Muriel L [7] born Hargrave

On the pension card his mother was in Hargrave, Bury Free press says at the Moat House.

His nephew Eric Sidney William Pettitt was killed in France on D-Day 1944 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 26th February 1916. Wounded badly by gunshot wounds in the back, he was discharged on 18th July 1918. He suffered from war wounds for quite some time before dying, on 31st May 1920, aged 27, at Netherne Asylum(temporary war hospital) at Hooley and interred in Reigate on 3rd June 1920.

There has been found nothing to say exactly where he was or when he was wounded.

He is not recorded by CWGC and the absence of Army documentation as to the cause of his discharge from the Army,
precludes application for his recognition.
