Thomas Joseph Phillips was born in 1893 (2nd qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:778) son of Herbert and Ellen PHILLIPS (née POTTER),usually known as Joe.

1901 census...Aged 8, Joe was at the Street, Hargrave with his father Herbert PHILLIPS [31] farm labourer; his mother Ellen [29] born Bradfield St Clare; sisters Rosina [5] and Maud [3]; brother Frederick [1]. All except his mother were born in Hargrave

1911 census...Aged 18, Thomas Joseph a farm labourer, was at Hargrave still, with his parents; sisters Ellen Maud [13] and Ada Mary [8]; brothers George Herbert [6], Arthur [4] and Charles Albert [2].

He married Laura Louisa PHILLIPS in 4th qtr 1917 in Bury St Edmunds.
On the pension card his widow is Laura Louisa, but also what appears to be Alice B..? Gault as guardian of illegitimate child, crossed out and Mrs Mary Talbot inserted



He enlisted in Barnsley.(?)
The four Machine Gun Guards companies were formed into the Guards Machine Gun Regiment in May 1918, then in June formed into battalions.The 4th (Foot Guards) Battalion remained with the Guards Division.
"Joe" and his pal 19 years old Henry SYE from Liverpool were the only casualties of the battalion as they consolidated just NE of Maubeuge on the day before the Armistice
