William Stevens was born in 1884 at Barrow on Soar (4th qtr 1884 Barrow on Soar 7a:151) son of William and Harriett STEVENS(née SWAN )

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Rhyl Villa, Kempston, Beds with his father William STEVENS [36] gardener born Kempston; his mother Harriett [35] born Cambridge; brother Robert [15] carpenter's apprentice; sisters Louisa [13], Harriett [9] and Maria [8]. All the children were born in Barrow on Soar, Leics.

1901 census...Aged 16 a gamekeeper's assistant, he was at Twaites Cottages, Great Saxham with his parents.

He married Rosa JAKEMAN [22-7-1887] in St.Neots in 1909 . Their daughters were Rosa [22-11-1911](Bury St.Edmunds) and Joan [7-1-1913](Risbridge). Joan died on 12th May 1918

1911 census...Aged 28, a jobbing gardener, he was at Chedburgh Road, Chevington with his wife Rosa (born Assington). They had already lost their first child (Joan May 1910-1911)

On the pension card his widow was in Hargrave.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
The battalion was in the Monchy sector and on 9th August 350 of the battalion took part in a raid which was quite successful, despite heavy casualties. Heading toward Bois Vert and the Mopund they caused much damage and took 69 prisoners, but had 39 killed ( all bar 10 named on the Arras Memorial)
