John Philip Clarke was born in Hartest(3rd qtr 1891 Sudbury 4a:709) son of John and Maria CLARKE (née SMITH)

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at The Green, Hartest with his father John CLARKE [53] groom born Hawkedon; his mother Marie [40]; sister May A [17]; brothers Fred J [15] stockman, Stephen [12] and Frank [6]. All except his father born in Hartest.

1911 census...Aged 19, Philip was at Churchgate, Hartest with his parents; brother Charles (postman), Frederick and Stephen (labourers) and Frank (baker).

On the pension card his mother was at Churchgate, Hartest

His brother Charles died of wounds later in the year see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
With no service record and dying of wounds it is impossible to say exactly where or whe he was wounded. At tat time the battalion was in the Guinchy area.
