George Edward Stiff was born in Hartest on 15th July 1920 (3rd qtr 1920 Sudbury 4a:1861) son of William Robert and Margaret Bessie STIFF (née LINN)

He was a motor driver.

His brother Frederick was killed in an air accident in 1946 when attached to 201 Squadron see here


Captured by the Japanese in Java on 8th March 1942. Their party arrived from Java in Changi (Singapore) on 23rd October 1942). He died in Shimonoseki Quarantine station (Kokura Military Hospital), after being transported Japan on the Singapore Maru on 28th October 1942. The Singapore Maru is entered on the list of "Hell Ships"

George Stiff was inintially buried in Yokohama Cemtery, ashes moved on 11th October 1946 and is now commemorated on the Yokahama Cremation Memorial, Japan. panel 6
