ARCHER, Harold Claude

No. 2615899, Guardsman, Harold Claude ARCHER
Aged 23

3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards
Died on Active Service on Friday 6th August 1943

Harold Claude ARCHER was born in Haverhill (Risbridge Q3-1920 4A:1811), son of Richard and Beatrice ARCHER (née RUDD ).

In 1934, the Council School football team were winners of the West Suffolk Schools Cup. Harold played in this team and is pictured back row 2nd from right, standing beside Mr W B Gurteen.

In the 1939 register his parents Richard J [25/9/1879] a baker and confectioner, and Beatrice C [15/4/1880] were at 17 Mill Hill, Haverhill with his sisters Elsie M [11/8/1903] a brusher off /folder at clothiers and St John's Ambulance, and Kathleen G (later HANNON) [25/2/1922] sewing machinist and brother Victor L. [11/5/1924] grocer's store keeper.

The 3rd Grenadier Guards were part of the 1st Army in the fighting in Tunisia. The Tunisian campaign ended with the surrender of the Germans in May 1943. The cause of Harold's death was therefore unknown, until this newspaper item was found. Unfortunately the cause of the accident is unknown. It does seem likely the accident was on the 5th as three of his battalion died that day.
He was first buried at Baharine, but all these graves were moved to Medjez el Bab in June 1944
