John Henry BURGON was born at 31 Queens Street, Haverhill on 20th March 1898 (Risbridge Q2-1898 4A:757), baptised in St.Mary's on 18th May 1898, son of Arthur Pollard and Maria Louisa BURGON (née FELL ).
His father Arthur Burgon M.R.C.V.S. was a local veterinary. His mother was the daughter of Edward and Sarah FELL, one time keepers of the Rose and Crown Hotel, Queens Street. Grandfather Edward FELL died before 1881, but Sarah continued at the Rose and Crown at least until 1901.



1901 census...Aged 3, 'Jack' was at 31 Queens Street, Haverhill with his father Arthur BURGON [35] veterinary surgeon born Cheam, Surrey; his mother Mary [35]; brothers Edward [4] and William [1]. All except his father were born in Haverhill.

1911 census...Aged 13, John was at 21 Hamlet Road, Haverhill with his parents; sister Winifred [20] born Haverhill; brothers Edward, William, and Alec [9] born Haverhill; widowed grandmother Sarah FELL [91] born Clare.


The South West Suffolk Echo recorded on 20th March 1915:-
"Burgon On March 16th. at Aldershot, John Henry Burgon, 2nd. A.M. Royal Flying Corps, second son of Maria and Arthur P. Burgon, Haverhill, aged 16 years.
(His father Mr. A.P. Burgon MRCVS was a local Vet.)"


The Army "Soldiers Personal Effects" entry says he died of Meningitis at Aldershot. With no overseas posting he would not be entitled to any medals or gratuity.
