Frederick "Ted" Kiddy was born in 1889 in Haverhill (Haverhill Q1-1891 4A:691) son of Harry and Fanny KIDDY (née BIGMORE). His father's first wife Kate (née HARDY, mother of Charles, died in Q1-1884 aged 21 and his father then married Fanny BIGMORE.(Risbridge Q4-1886 4A:1055) (but in 1891 according to 1911 census) 1891 census...Aged 4 months, he was at Moon Hall Cottages, Bumpstead Road, Haverhill with his father Harry KIDDY [29] farm labourer born Helions Bumpstead; his stepmother Fanny [24] born Kedington; half brother Charles [8] born Haverhill. 1901 census...Aged 10, he was at 3 Bumpstead Road, Haverhill with his father; stepmother; half brother Charles (a hair weaver); brother David [1] born Haverhill; sister Maude [2] born Sturmer. 1911 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was at France Cottages, Sturmer with his father; stepmother; half brother Charles (a hair cloth weaver), brother David; sisters Maud, Daisy [8] and May[4] both born in Sturmer. Frederick enlisted in Haverhill.
The 9th Suffolk were in support for 6th Division's operations at Transloy. The Battle of Le Transloy began on 1st October and the 9th Suffolks made their way to the front where they were charged with holding positions at Misty and Cloudy Trenches. In worsening weather and in dreadful battlefield conditions a renewed major assault in the afternoon saw the infantry flounder and the operation was not successful.The 9th Suffolks had just been relieved in the front line by the 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. It was on this day, 12th October, 1916,that Frederick was killed in action just a few weeks before his 26th birthday. Only Frederick was killed that day. |
