Elias LLOYD was born in Haverhill (Risbridge Q2-1884 4A:587)] to William and Rebecca (née DARKING). 1891 census...Aged 6 he was a 39 Mill Road, Haverhill with his father William LLOYD, 44] silk weaver; his mother Rebecca [39]; sister Sophie [19] hair weaver and Sarah [18] cloth machinist; brothers William [8] and Charles [4]. All were born in Haverhill. 1901 census...Aged 16, a home lad, he was at 54 Mill Road, Haverhill with his parents; brothers William (clerk) and Charles (hair cloth trimmer). 1911 census...Aged 26, a railway shunter G.E.R., he was boarding at 54 Brookfields, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge with the BROWN family. His parents were at 54 Mill Road, Haverhill, father an invalid and mother a midwife. Of 8 siblings, 2 had died. His brother William had married Alice Beatrice CHALLICE [28] and they had sons William Walker [5] and Edwin Roy [3] Elias LLOYD [28] sailed from Liverpool to Quebec on the "Ascania" on 12th June 1913, arriving 23rd June. His father died in 1916 and his next of kin became his mother who was at one time at 18 Spence Road, Lansdowne Road, Tottenham (1917) and later at 20 Bruce Grove Road, Tottenham. (1920/21) |

The South West Suffolk Echo of 1st November 1917 reported:- "Mrs Rebecca Lloyd of 20 Bruce Road, Tottenham, formerly resident at 56 Mill Road, Haverhill, has been notified that her second son, Pte Elias Lloyd of a Canadian Machine Gun Coy., is seriously ill at No.53 General Hospital, Boulogne as a result of a shrapnel wound in the right shoulder. Prior to emigrating to Canada, where he enlisted, Pte. Lloyd was a shunter on the G.E.R. at Cambridge." and then on 29th December the paper recorded that:- "Readers will regret to learn of the death of Pte. Elias Lloyd, of a Canadian Machine Gun Coy., which occurred at the 53rd General Hospital, Boulogne, on December 15th, the cause of death being shrapnel wound, right shoulder (septic) and broncho-pneumonia. Pte Lloyd was the second son of the late Mr. W.Lloyd and Mrs.Lloyd, who now lives at 20 Bruce Grove, Tottenham. He was formerly a shunter in the employ of the G.E.R. while stationed in Cambridge some three and half years ago. He emigrated to Canada and while there, in the early months of 1916, he enlisted. He had been in France nearly twelve months, and the sad news will be regretted by all who were acquainted with him" Elias enlisted on 28th March 1916, in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, when living in Limerick, Saskatchewan. He gave his date of birth as 15th May 1884, in Haverhill, England. He was single, a farmer, 5 feet 6.5 inches (168.9 cm) tall chest 34" to 36.5" (86.4 to 92.7 cm), blue eyes, brown hair, a Methodist. His next of kin was his father William of 54 Mill Road, Haverhill. After some training he sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on 3rd October 1916 aboard the SS "Missanalie", arriving in Liverpool on 13th. Following further training at Canadian Machine Gun Corps Depot at Crowborough, he sailed to Le Havre in 8th February 1917, joining the 15th Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps in the field on 14th. He was wounded in the right shoulder in action near Passchendaale on the 11th November and admitted to No 1 Canadian Field Ambulance, passed to No53 General Hospital in Boulogne on the 12th. By 21st November he was deemed to be seriously ill, but it was not until 15th December he succumbed to his wounds. The cause given was septic wound and broncho-pneumonia. It was towards the end of the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). His battalion war diary records:- "St Jean, sheet 28.C.27.d.5.7. - 11th - 7:45 am. The company paraded and proceeded up the line, "A" and "B" sections relieving 9 of the 13th Cdn M.G.Coy in Battery position No.5 (D.11.a.6.9). "C" and "D" sections relieving 8 gnrs of the 3rd Cdn M.G.Coy in Battery position no 6 (D.5.c.4.0). 1 Sgt, 1 Cpl per section and 4 men per gun crew were taking into the line. Casualties while the relief was being effected 3 O.Rs were wounded and 1 gun was put out of action. Relief completed and reported correct at 11:30 am.: The view below shows the positions on the day.
