MEADE, Albert Ernest

No.5209, Private, Albert MEADE
Aged 20

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on 6th February 1901

It is not always possible to match the soldier with the civilian with these Boer War casualties.
That means I can only record "most likely to be" in many cases for the civilian identity

Albert Ernest MEADE was born in Haverhill (3rd qtr 1880 Risbridge 4a:520) son of George and Frances MEADE(née PLEDGER).

1881 census...Aged 1 month, he was at Croft Row, Haverhill with his father George MEADE [48] farm labourer; his mother Frances [41]; sisters Mary Ann 20 (shirt maker), Emily Eliza [17], Emma [15] (shirtmaker), Jane [12], Ellen [10], Alice 6 and Kate Elizabeth [4]; brother William [8]. All were born in Haverhill. Albert's age here is definitely wrong, he was registered in 3rd qtr 1880.

1891 census...Aged 10, he was at 12 Waveney Terrace with his mother; sisters Mary Ann, Emma, Ellen, Alice, Kate; brothers William, Harry [8] and Cyril [5]; niece Violet [3[ parentage not given]. His father has not been found, but mother is still recorded as married.

By 1901 his widowed mother and his siblings were still at 12 Waveney Terrace

His "Soldier's Personal Effects entry records his legatees as Mother - Frances; brothers William, Harry and Cgarles; sisters Ellen, Kate, Mary, Emma, Janet and Alice

He was killed at Lake Chrissie, Transvaal.
His Queen's South Africa medal carries the clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1901
