SHIPP [TILBROOK], Ernest George

No.10149, Private, Ernest George SHIPP
Aged 31

6th Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment
Killed in Action on Thursday, 30th August 1917

Ernest George TILBROOK was born in Haverhill on 19th April 1898 at 23 Clements Lane (Risbridge Q2-1898 4A:759), son of Sarah Ann TILBROOK who died in childbirth (Risbridge Q2-1898 4A:373). He was baptised in St Mary's, Haverhill on 14th May 1898

1901 census...Aged 3 he was a visitor at 8 Lawrence Road, Edmonton, he was at 8 Lawrence Road, Edmonton with George SHIPP [39] a navvy and his wife Elizabeth [38]; their sons George [22] navvy, and John [14] navvy and Albert [9]; their daughter Kate [16] cigar factory labourer, and Rose [11]. All were born in Haverhill. Ernest TILBROOK appears to be the son of George SHIPP (Junr)and Sarah Ann TILBROOK who died in childbirth in 1898. There can be confusion as 3 Ernest TILBROOK were born around that time in Risbridge. There is a possibility of course that Ernest was the son of George SHIPP junior.

1911 census...Aged 12, Ernest is now recorded as SHIPP and son of George and Elizabeth SHIPP of 43 Felixstowe Road, Upper Edmonton, together with George (junior), John and Rose SHIPP. All are born in Haverhill. Whether Ernest was officially adopted or simply took to using SHIPP as his surname is not known.

The Army have his sole legatee as his sister Rose S.CURTIS which creates more confusion unless Rose was actually Sarah Rose and as such she married Philip CURTIS in Edmonton in 1913.

His adopted brother Albert was killed serving in Belgium in the Grenadier Guards in 1914 see here

His adopted brother Harry was killed serving in the Grenadier Guards in France in 1915 see here

He enlisted in London.
The battalion was in the line near Bullecourt. The Battalion HQ is shown below. The war diary has:-
" 30th - Slight artillery strafe.Quiet otherwise. German propaganda dropped on our line on aerial darts".

Ernest was their only death in the line that day.
