Walter George TURNER was born in London on11th November 1909 (Hampstead Q4-1909 1A:546 ), son of Daniel [George] and Florence Beatrice TURNER (née HEWAT). His father was previously married to Edith BRAND from Barford Norfolk. 1911 census...Aged 1, he was at the Fleet Tavern, 90 Parkhill Road, Hampstead with his father Daniel (known as George) TURNER [43] licensed victualler, born Hundon; his mother Florence Beatrice [23] (place of birth not recorded); half brother Frank Thayer [13];half sisters Eva Kate [12] and Mabel May [6], all born in Hampstead. His parents went on to become publicans at the Bull and Last Public House, Highgate Road, St.Pancras. He married Withersfield born Elsie Rebecca JACOBS [3-10-1908] in 1932 (Pancras Q3-1932 1B:205). Their son John W was born on 5th September 1934 (Pancras Q3-1934) At the time of the 1939 Register, Elsie and their son had moved back to Haverhill and were living with her parents, Herbert and Rose at 8b Vine Cottages, Burton End, Haverhill. Walter, at this time, was still in London living at 47 Lisburne Road, Hampstead working as a Publican’s Bar Cellarman (Heavy). |

Exactly when Walter enlisted is not known. However, he joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
The Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) was a Corps of the British Army. Until 1942 it was both a supply and repair corps. In the supply area it had responsibility for weapons, armoured vehicles and other military equipment, ammunition and clothing and certain minor functions such as laundry, mobile baths and photography. The RAOC was also responsible for a major element of the repair of Army equipment. It is not known why Walter was on a ship in Larne, Northern Ireland on 9th December 1941. What is known is that Walter died on this day under tragic circumstances. The Larne Times of Thursday 11th December 1941 carried a report about his death. |
