Herbert Henry Brinkley was born in Woolpit (2nd qtr 1897 Stow 4a:819) son of Harry and Georgianna BRINKLEY (née COOPER)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Kiln Lane.Elmswell with his father Harry BRINKLEY,[40] horseman on farm born Woolpit; his mother Georgianna [38] born Wickhambrook; brothers William George [12] born Woolpit and Harry Frank [5] born Elmswell; sisters Nellie [10] and Olive Susan [6] both born in Woolpit.

1911 census...Aged 14, he was at Pipers Farm, Whepstead, Hawstead with his parents; sisters Olive and Rosy [5] born Elmswell; grandfather Zacharia BRINKLEY [79].

On the pension card his mother was at Pipers Farm, Whepstead, Bury St. Edmunds.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Initially in the 1st/6th Cyclists Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, they provided a large draft of reinforcements to the 7th Battalion in France. The right hand medal is one of the rarest campaign medals of WW1, The Territorial Force War Medal.
The 7th Suffolks were in the Arras sector and on 28th August 1916 were actually having a quiet day, preparing to be relieved by the 7th Norfolks. Even on a quiet day they had 5 killed.
