Samuel Brunger was born in 1895 in Rolvenden (2nd qtr 1895 Tenterden Union 2a:809), son of James and Nancy Mercer BRUNGER (née WATSON)

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at "Singleton Cottage", Great Chart, Kent with his father James BRUNGER [32] yardman; his mother Nancy [31]; brothers William [9], Harry [3] and Robert [1] born Great Chart; sister Alice [7]. Except for Robert, all were born in Rolvenden, Kent.

1911 census...Aged 15, a gardener, he was still at "Singleton" with his widowed mother, brothers William (stockman), Harry and Ernest [7]; sister Annie [6]. Ernest and Annie born in Great Chart. His father had died in 1904. His mother married Frederick LILLEY in 1915

His sole Legatee was Herbert COSTER ?...no documentation has been found connecting Samuel with Horringer, but it is likely he became a gardener at Ickworth


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
December 9th Jerusalem was taken, and on the 15th the 5th Suffolks were assaulting Bornat Hill. Despite machine gun fire, they reahed the lower slopes with few casualties, then climbed the slope, only to find the Turkish defenders had left. This however left the Suffolks on the receiving end of a heavy artillery bombardment causing 75 casualties.
