1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment

Walter William Coman was born in Old Buckenham, Norfolk on 27th February 1891 (2nd qtr 1891 GUILTCROSS 4b:259) son of Anne COMAN (née LANCASTER). He was baptised in Old Buckenham on 14th April 1895. His PoW record has date of birth in 1892.

1891 census...Aged 1 month, he was at Priest Hill, Old Buckenham with his father Walter COMAN [40] shepherd born Wattlefield, Norfolk; his mother Ann [36]; sisters Ellen [5] and Caroline [2]. All except his father were born in Old Buckenham.

1901 census...Aged 10, he was still at Priest Hill with his parents and sister Caroline.

1911 census...Aged 20, farm labourer, he was at Fen Street, Old Buckenham with his parents. His mother had lost 2 of her 4 children

On his pension card, his parents were still at Fen Street, Old Buckenham. No documentation has been found linking him with Horringer but as with some others here, it is likely he came to be employed at Ickworth Park

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The Battalion war diary for 12th-19th April was lost in the fighting, and by the 19th, the battalion had only 5 officer and 82 other ranks effective. They were joined by some stragglers later, bring the total survivors up to 103 ORs
Walter was captured, un-injured at Wytschaete on 16th April 1918. Sadly the International Red Cross records do not show how or why he died. All the British burials in Erquellines were made by the Germans in October/November 1918.

Walter Coman is buried in Erquellines Communal Cemetery, Belgium 124
