George William Finch was born in Horringer(3rd qtr 1887 Thingoe 4a:675) son of James Patrick and Rebecca Susannah FINCH (née CAMPIN or CAMPION).
1891 census...Aged 3, (entered as William) he was at The Street, Horringer with his mother Rebecca FINCH [42] born Hawstead; brothers John [18] farm labourer, James [16] blacksmith and Frank [1]; sisters Esther [14], Jane [12], Harriet [9], Ellen [6] and Rebecca [3]. All the children were born in Horringer. His father James FINCH [45] a farm labourer, was a patient in West Suffolk Hosptial, Bury St.Edmunds. Very likely this was due to an accident whereby he was blinded 1901 census...Aged 13, George was still at The Street, Horringer with his father James FINCH [54] unemployed (blind); his mother; sister Nellie (Ellen); brother Frank and Robert [9]; cousin Frederick [3] born Westley. 1911 census...Aged 25, he was a footman at Theydon Garnon, Essex. His parents were still in Horringer with his brother Robert (shepherd). His mother had lost 1 of her 11 children. He married Elizabeth Alice WORRELL [14-8-1887] in 1916 in Hendon, later of 19 Dancer Road, Fulham (on the pension card) His brother Frank died later in 1917 see here |

He enlisted in Marylebone.
The 6th Battalion on 17th March 1917 were in billets at Humbercourt, so George must have been with 23rd Trench Mortar Battery but that war diary has not been found
