William Charles Robbins was born in Brightling, Sussex (4th qtr 1879 Battle 2b:61) son of Michael "George" and Martha Jane ROBBINS(née BARNES).

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at Keepers Cottage, Froyle, nr Alton, Hampshire, with his father George ROBBINS [33] gamekeeper born Houghton, Dorset; his mother Martha [31] born Clanstone, Dorset; brothers Steve [14] born Clanstone and Fred [8] born Whitechurch, Dorset; sisters Louisa [11] born Whitechurch, Annie [6] and Elizabeth [4] both born Winchfield, Hants

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at the Keeper's Cottage, Ickworth Hall with his widower father (mother died 1890); brothers Steve (gamekeeper), and Arthur [2 months] born Alresford, Hants; sisters Louisa, Elizabeth and Hettie [6] born Froyle.

His father married Isabella Wilson HUMPHREYS in 1895

1901 census...Aged 21, a stableman, he was at "Stables at Stone Pit, Cold Newton, Leics. His father and stepmother Isabella [45] born Irchester; sister Hettie, half sister Helena [3] born Ickworth and brother Arthur were "near the dairy" Ickworth hall.

His father died in 1903 and William married Mabel Elizabeth Barton (born Bury St.Edmunds) in 1906 at St.Mary's Sampford whilst resident in Horringer

1911 census...Aged 31, a gardener/groom, he was at Little Sampford, nr Braintree with his wife Mabel[31] born Bury St.Edmunds; daughter May Elizabeth [4] and George William [2] both born in Little Sampford.

Their daughter Amy Gladys was born on 20th September 1913 in Little Sampford


He was mobilised at Warley on the 1st August 1916, posted No.G/16653 Middlesex Regt on 3rd August, giving age as 35 years 10 months, a stableman from Horringer, born Brightling, Sussex. He was 5 feet 5.25 inches tall, weighed 105 lbs, chest 31 to 34 inches . Next of kin Mabel Elizabeth ROBBINS (wife) of Horringer (they had 3 children). His medical condition was Class C2.
Transferred to 5th Labour Battalion on 18th May 1917 and 399 Emp.Coy on 6th July 1917. He died at the Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton from haemoptysis and chronic bronchitis

Army Form 5080 completed by his wife in Horringer in 1919 gives his living blood relatives as :- children: May Elizabeth 26-7-1906, George William 22-2-1909 and Amy Gladys 20-9-1912 - both parent dead - brothers Steve [49] no address, Frederick [45] Old Park, Warwickshire and Arthur [34] Thrift St, Irchester; sisters Louisa JACOBS [50] 80 Chatterton Rd, Bromley, Annie CORLEY [45] Roundshill Lane, Kenilworth, Lizzie ROBBINS [43] Sutton Place Hawley Kent and Nellie ROBBINS [36] Thrift Street, Irchester
It looks as if his medical condition precluded him from overseas service. The pages that may have given more information are missing or too badly damaged.
