Ernest Sargent was born in Hawstead (2nd qtr 1893 4a:759), son of Philip and Kate SARGEANT (née HAMMETT).

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Pinford End, Hawstead with his father Philip SARGEANT [32] stockman born Bury St.Edmunds; his mother Kate [35] born Cockfield; sister Edith [7] and brother Sydney [1] both born Hawstead.

1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was at Little Horringer Hall with his parents; brother Philip Sydney and sister Annie Mabel [6] born Hawstead.

On the pension card his parents were at Little Horringer Hall.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
In September the battalion was holding the crest of Hill 60, which dominating the view over the countryside, was keenly fought for, although dysentery was equally an enemy.
