OSBORNE, Alfred

No.27265, Private, Alfred OSBORNE
Aged 20

1st/5th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment
formerly 2910, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Tuesday, 28th August 1917

Alfred Charles Osborne was born in Hundon (Risbridge Q4-1896 4A:765), son of Alfred and Martha Ellen OSBORNE (née TAYLOR).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Stradishall Road, Hundon with his father Alfred OSBORNE [39] horsekeeper; his mother Ellen [32]; sisters Sarah [12] (Sarah Ann Osborne TAYLOR) and Alice [9]; brother Harry [6]. All were born in Hundon.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at East Lodge, Hundon with his parents, sister Sarah and brother Harry (farm labourer). I believe Easty Lodge is now Appleacre Farm, another instance where an address seems to fall near the junction of two parishes, and Alfred being named in Stradishall as well as Hundon. His mother later moved to Ivy Cottage, Hundon.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
Dying of his wounds in a hospital it is impossible to be sure, without his service records, when or when he was wounded. Earlier that month the battalion had been fighting in the Sint Juliaan area, just NE of Ypres. Lijssenthoek was the site of several casualty clearing stations, being 12 km from Ypres and just about out of range of all bar the heaviest guns.
