Benjamin Starling was born in Hundon on 25th April 1892 (Risbridge Q2-1892 4A:718), baptised in Hundon All Saints on 24th July 1892 son of Harry
and Emily STARLING (née MAYES).
He was admitted to Hundon Board School in September 1895, leaving 25th April 1905 with a labour certificate. 1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Horn Row, Hundon with his widower father Henry STARLING [40] farm labourer born in Stradishall; step sister Esther MAYES [19]; brother (Harry) Willie [11] and sister Mary [3]. All except his father were born in Hundon. His father had married Emily MAYES (Risbridge Q2-1889) but she died in Q1-1901. 1911 census...Aged 18, cow man, he was at Brown Moor, Leavening, Yorkshire with the TOWSE family. His father was in Hundon with Ben's sister Mary. Brother Harry William enlisted in 1916 - No.155541, Royal Field Artillery, served in France/Flanders and was medically discharged to live at Bethan Lodge, Hundon on January 1st 1918. |

He died at No 43 General Hospital, Salonica.
Arriving in France/Flanders as early as 20th August he must have been a regular soldier, or at least a Reservist. He does not have the clasp for the 1914 Star, but this had to be claimed by his relatives who often never bothered. That long after the Armistice it must be that he died of illness.
