Alfred Leponard Masters was born on 29th January 1919 (1st qtr 1919 Bethnal Green 1c:187), son of Alfred Nicholas and Catherine Letitia MASTERS(née DOYLE).

In the 1939 register he was single, machine leather press operator, living at 224 Corfield Street, Bethnal Green with his father Alfred,[12-2-1877] widower, shipping clerk, sister Violet [29-11-1912] exporter's clerk] and brother John [9-8-1914] tailor's presser. His mother had died in 1933

So far his connection with Ixworth has not been found.


He enlisted in the The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) on 16th October 1939 and was transferred to the Buffs (3579) on 13th September 1942

The 2nd Buffs crossed the Irrawaddy River in January 1945, but met with fierce opposition when trying to cross the River Shweli. The initial attempt was not successful, it took another assault further north to finally get the Battalion across and a bridgehead established at Myitson

He was originally buried in Mandalay War Cemetery, he was later moved to Taukkyan
