CORNELL, William Arthur

5825088, Private, William Arthur CORNELL
Aged 30
medal entitlement not known

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died on Saturday, 15th June 1940

William Arthur Cornell was born in Kedington (Risbridge Q3-1909 4A:874), son of Jessie CORNELL. She married George William BALDRY in Q4-1909

1911 census...Aged 1, he was at Mill Hill, Kedington with his step-father George William BALDRY [26] farm labourer, born Little Wratting; his mother Jessie [21] born Kedington; half brother Walter Albert [2 months] born Kedington.

His address for probate was Railway Terrace, Kedington, granted to Jessie BALDRY. That was the family address for the 1939 register, his mother, stepfather and half brother David (6-11-1933). His mother later became Mrs Sorrell.

The 1st Suffolks, 3rd Division BEF were ordered to Dunkirk in the evacuation of 1940. The evacuation ended on 4th June, so it seems likely that William died of wounds on their way to Dunkirk. Records of those who failed to make the beaches are scant indeed.
