"KEDINGTON WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of KEDINGTON who died in the service of their country
Eighteen in the Great War of 1914-1919, and four in 1939-1945

On the right of the path as you approach St.Peter and St.Paul's Church, Mill Road, Kedington, a Portland stone cross urde in a slightly tapering octagonal shaft, (the end points of the cross are decorated with a rose) on a York stone octagonal plinth mounted on three York stone octagonal steps, all on a York stone square concrete base. An eight pillared surround which, unusually, has no chains.

Details of the memorial appeared in the South West Suffolk Echo 26th March 1921. Paid for by public subscription and built by E.C.Green, the memorial was unveiled on 20th March 1921 Brigadier-General J.A.Coxhead C.B. and dedicated by Rev Canon Perry.

The names and the dedication are inscribed on five sides of the centre step of the plinth, clockwise from the front face.
The names, in alphabetical order of surname include surname, forename, year died, regiment and decorations. Originally the panels only showed the names of the men. The other details were added when the memorial was refurbished, I think about 1998 or 99, and were taken from research by Rodney Gibson. The Parish Council paid for the refurbishment and the RBL paid to have the extra details added. New stones were cut and glued to the existing structure, as it was deemed impossible to add the details to the existing structure.

The panels, in clockwise order read:-

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
