Albert is placed here in Kirtling, purely on the strength of his family living there for at least 20 years, but as his father was a policeman and he himself went on to work on the railway, he never stayed any length of time anywhere. The records show him as from Isleham but that seems to be just where he was born.

Albert Barker was born in Isleham (4th qtr 1866 Newmarket 3b:523) son of Rushforth and Emma BARKER(née DEANE).

1871 census...Aged 4, he as on The Green, Kirtling, with his father Rushforth BARKER, 44, a police constable born Histon; his mother Emma [40], born Great Shelford; brothers William C [9] and Harry [2]; sister Florence [8]. All the children were born in Isleham.

1881 census...Aged 14, a railway clerk, he was boarding at Debden Road, Saffron Walden with railway porter Thomas Colville and his family. His family were still in Kirtling.

In 4th qtr 1888, in Bury St.Edmunds, he married Bury St.Edmunds born Sarah DEACON

1891 census... Aged 24, married, a railway number taker, he was lodging at 7 Station Road, Coalville, Whitwick, Leicestershire with railway signalman George Taylor and his family. His wife Sarah [27] and sons Albert Edward [1] and Victor Algiers (6 months )were with her widowed mother at Cotton Lane, Eastgate, Bury St.Edmunds. His parents were still in Kirtling

His wife and children have not been found in the 1901 census. Their son Percy Reginald was born in Kettering in 1st qtr 1898 and daughter Maud May was born in Kettering (2nd qtr 1900). By 1911 they had moved back to Bury St.Edmunds, at 28 College Street.


He died in Bloemfontein from disease.
