RUMSEY, Robert

No.2876, Private, Robert RUMSEY
Aged 19

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of Disease on 14th February 1901

It is not always possible to match the soldier with the civilian with these Boer War casualties.
That means I can only record "most likely to be" in many cases for the civilian identity

This is one such case where it is not certain I have the right civilian but his "Soldier's Effects" record has father William.

Robert RUMSEY was born in Lakenheath (3rd qtr 1871 Mildenhall 4a:490) son of William and Elizabeth RUMSEY (née DIXON). his birth registration year is at variance with other records which say 1873.

1881 census...Aged 8, he was at Pashford, Lakemheath with his father William RUMSEY [58] famr labourer, born Balsham; his mother Elizabeth [51] born Winfarthing; brothers Thomas [28], Samuel [21], Alan [16] all farm labourers, and Jesse [7]; cousin Elizabeth Margaret RUMSEY [6]. All the children were born in Lakenheath.

1891 census...Not found on this census. His parents were at Mill Road.

Maybe he was the Robert Rumsey [24] who sailed on SS Cuzco from Plymouth bound for Australia on 21st August 1897.

He died in Pretoria

His Queens South Africa medal carries the clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1901

Robert RUMSEY is commemorated on Cornhill Statue. Bury St Edmunds
also St Mary. North aisle west end. Tablet. Suffolk Regiment Bury St Edmunds
and Christchurch Park. Statue. Ipswich
