All except his grandmother were born in Lawshall 1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at The Street, Lawshall with his grand-parents; uncle Frederick; aunts Minne, Florence, Ethel and Maud [8] On the pension card his grandmother was still in Lawshall, she was also his legatee. |

In trenches near Clery sur Somme, the war diary has:- During the early morning heavy trench mortars landed in trenches occupied by D Coy on left, one killing 6 OR and another killing 1 OR and wounding 1 OR Relieved by 4th King's Liverpool Regt. Relief started at 7:45 pm and was completed by 11:45 pm Casualties 7 OR killed and 4 OR wounded.
