Sydney Britton was born in Lawshall (4th qtr 1889 Sudbury 4a:675) son of Henry James and Lydia Louisa BRITTON (née BIGG). He gave his date of birth to the Canadian Army as 28th January 1891

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Audley End Cottages, Lawshall with his father Henry J BRITTON [42] farm labourer born Shimpling; his mother Lydia L [42] born Long Melford; sisters Elizabeth [16], Ellen [12] and Cecilia [7]; brothers William [10], Roland [8] Alphonso [5] and Edwin [3]. All the children were born in Lawshall.

1901 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was still at Audley End Cottages with his parents; sister Cecilia; brothers, Roland (farm labourer), Alphonso and Edwin.

1911 census...Aged 23, a farm labourer, he was at Audley End, Lawshall with his widower father and brother Edwin. His mother had died in 1905

On the pension card his father was at Audley End, Lawshall, later moving to 16 Risbygate Street,Bury St.Edmunds

His brother Rowland was killed later in 1917 in Belgium. see here


He attested for 46th Battalion at Estevan on 15th September 1915, givng his date of birth as 28 January 1891, next of kin, father Henry James Britton of Audley End, Lawshall. Occupation, farming unmarried. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, chest 24.5 to 35.5 inches, blue eyes flaxen hair, Church of England.
He sailed from Halifax on SS Lapland on 23rd October 1915, arriving Devonport 30th October. Landed in France on 17th June 1916, posted to 13th battlion. promoted Corporal 1st January 1917. He received a shrapnel wound to the right hip, and died at N0.1 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Aubigny.
