Percy Edward Hill was born in Lawshall (3rd qtr 1888 Sudbury 4a:646) son of John and Susan HILL (née FARROW). Susan was his father's 2nd wife, Mary Ann (née LAMBERT) had died in 1883.

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at Paradise Lane, Lawshall with his father John HILL [49] farm labourer; his mother Susan [49] born Shimpling; half brothers George [16] farm labourer, Alfred [13] and brother Willie [10]; half sister Ellen LAST [26] born Lawshall and brother in law Thomas LAST [26] (12th Suffolks) born Kentish Town. All except his mother and brother in law were born in Lawshall.

1901 census...Aged 12 he was at Shimpling Road, Lawshall with his parents.

1911 census...Aged 22, a shepherd, he was still at Shimpling Road, Lawshall with his parents

On the pension card his mother was at Shimpling Road, Lawshall.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
La BOURSE, war diary:-
12 noon...Relieved 6th QUEENS in trenches 5th R BERKS on left, troops of 15th Division on right
9:30 pm A German working party was discovered in front of the SLOT and was dispersed.


Percy's was the only death that day in the battalion
