Walter Henry Smith was born in Lawshall (1st qtr 1891 Sudbury 4a:727) son of Henry and Ada SMITH(née DYE)

1891 census...Aged 3 months, he was at Lawshall Green with his father Henry SMITH [25] farm labourer born Lawshall; his mother Ada [23] born Cockfield

1901 census...Aged 10 he was at Hibb's Green, Lawshall with his grandfather John DYE [65] carpenter born Hartest; his grandmother Mary Ann [57] born Lawshall; sisters Ellen [5] and Florrie [2] both born Lawshall. His parents were also at Hibb's Green with his sisters Mary [7] and Ethel [11 months].

1911 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was at Shimpling Road, Lawshall with his parents; sisters Florrie, Ethel and Hilda [1]; brothers Percy [8] and Norman [4]

On the pension card his mother was at Shimpling Road, Lawshall



He enlisted in Lowestoft.
War Diary
The battalion was at St Jean les Ypres: At 5:30 am a gas attack was made by the enemy. Gas was sent over from 5:30 am to 6 am and was followed by a very heavy bombardment of our trenches in St JEAN. It continued through the day and night following. Attack failed
D Coy and half of C Coy ordered to reinforce at 5:30 pm and (?) at 7:45 pm Casualties 2/Lt BF Collis wounded, 4 OR killed, 1 died of wounds, 1 died from gas poisoning, 40 wounded, 18 suffering from gas poisoning.
