WEBB, Leonard Cecil

No.T/245564, Driver, Leonard Cecil WEBB.
Aged 30

31st Coy., Royal Army Service Corps
Died on Sunday, 22nd November 1942

Leonard Cecil Webb was born on 2nd November 1912 in Saxon Street (Newmarket Q4-1912 3B:824), baptised in Woodditton, son of Cecil and Ada WEBB (née HOWE). His father was a painter. The family were in Little Thurlow in 1939.

The family lived next door to Fred SMITH's family, at 145 The Green, Little Thurlow. They were his father [27-12-1888] bricklayer; his mother [22-3-1889]; brother Leonard C [2-11-1912] a baker's journeyman; sisters Marjorie [6-7-1920] and Vera May [30-4-1929] (to become Mrs HEATH.

Because of the nature of the Royal Army Service Corps it had units attached to or serving with just about every division in every theatre of the war, and with details of the particular unit to which Leonard was attached it is impossible to accurately trace his movements. However, we know that he died and is buried ( originally in the civilian cemetery)in Caserta, Italy, on 22nd November 1942, nearly a full year before the Allies invaded Italy. The presumption is that he was injured and captured, possibly in Libya, and transported to the hospital at Caserta.
