SANSOM George Edward

No.3/8846, Private, George Edward SANSOM
Aged 28

2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire (Prince of Wales'Own) Regiment
Killed in Action on 18th March 1915

George Edward Sansom was born on 4th February 1887 in Wetherden(1st qtr 1887 Stow 4a:722) son of George and Alice SANSOM (née SCROBY)
Baptised in St Mary's, Wetherden on 17th April 1887. He was admitted to Wetherden Primary school on 28/7/1890 when they were resident at Duck Street, Wetherden. (some copies of school register have Church Walk?). He left that school on 19th December 1899

1891 census...not found in this census. The census does however have George CURTIS [26] farm labourer born Tostock, wife Ann [23] born Wetherden, George G [4] and Albert James [3]. All except George senior born in Wetherden. GRO records have George Edward SANSOM born 1887 and Albert James SANSOM born 1888 with mother maiden name SCROBY.

1901 census...not found in this census...there is at Uppertown, Wetherden a family, CURTIS, with these same? four (albeit mother is now Alice, not Ann) with the addition of Florence [10], Ella [8], William [6],Hilda [4] and Ada Maria [2]. Ada died 1902 as SANSOM and in 1903 another Ada Maria was born -SANSOM-SCROBY). All new siblings born in Wetherden. All were registered as SANSOM with mother's maiden names SCROBY. There is no trace of any reason for a name change, they are all still in Uppertown in 1911 as CURTIS. They all appear to use the SANSOM name on official document such as marriage or death but not the census ?

1911 census...Aged 24, as George SANSOM, a railway goods shunter, he was at 4 Dearnley's Yard, Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire with his wife Bertha [23] born Barnsley He married Bertha FISHER [20-7-1887] in 1910 in Halifax. Their son Percy was born 8th December 1911. Bertha later married to George W.SHARP a dyer's labourer, of 15 Charlotte Street, Sowerby Bridge, Yorks on 13th September 1916.

From brother William's pension card is can be seen that the parents George and Alice had moved to Crows Wood Lodge, Little Saxham from New Cottage, Horringer Hall. and were SANSOM

His brother William SANSOM was killed in 1916 see here
and his brother in law Frederick FISHER, died at home of his wounds in 1919 see here

He enlisted in Halifax and was killed in the fighting at Neuve Chapelle

It looks like his relatives never claimed the clasp to the 1914 Star
